The southeaster clause

WIND

Blouberg's wind makes the surf — and sometimes wrecks the morning. We check conditions at 06:00 and if your session isn't worth your money, we text you before you leave home. You rebook free, no arguing, no admin fee.

The week at Big Bay

WEEK
Mon–Fri 07:00
Dawn patrol group (L1) — glassy before the southeaster wakes up. Best odds of the week.
Mon–Fri 16:30
After-work group (L1) — winter favourite; summer sessions run only when the wind allows.
Sat 09:00
Grom Club (K) — kids only, whistles, flags and a lot of shrieking.
Sat–Sun 08:00 & 11:00
Weekend groups (L1 & L2) — two slots; the 08:00 usually gets the better water.
By arrangement
Private coaching (ALL) — we pick the tide window with you, then chase it.

Why learn with us

We read the wind

WHY

Twelve years at this beach. We know which bank works on a west swell and when to call the morning off — and we tell you honestly.

Small groups only

WHY

Never more than six per coach. You get pushed into waves, corrected on the spot, and out of the whitewater faster.

Warm, decent kit

WHY

The Atlantic is cold; our 4/3 wetsuits aren't tired rentals. Boards are replaced every two seasons, not every rumour of a budget.

The coaches

Thandi Mokoena

L1–L2 · K
Head coach Thandi Mokoena holding a soft-top board at Big Bay

Head coach, ISA Level 2, founder of Grom Club. Has pushed roughly nine thousand first waves and still cheers every one.

Dane van Wyk

L1
Coach Dane van Wyk waxing a board on the Big Bay lawn

First-timer specialist and NSRI lifeguard. If you're nervous about the ocean, ask for Dane — patience is his whole personality.

Mia Fourie

L2 · ALL
Coach Mia Fourie carrying two boards toward the shoreline

Ex-WQS competitor, runs the private sessions and video reviews. Turns "I can stand" into "I can actually surf".

Before you ask

FAQ
I've never surfed and I can barely swim. Problem?

L1 lessons happen in waist-deep water on a sandy bank. You need to be comfortable in the sea, not fast in a pool.

How cold is the water, honestly?

Cold — 13–17°C. In a 4/3 wetsuit you'll be surprised how little you notice after the first duck under.

What happens if the wind wrecks my booking?

We text you by 06:00 (or three hours before an afternoon slot) and you rebook free. See the southeaster clause up top.

What do I bring?

Swimwear, a towel, sunscreen and water. Board, wetsuit and the stoke are on us.
